CINEMA AND PAINTING, HOPPER

Author: Gonzalo Cordero de Ciria

Canal+, Spanish payment channel, issued a cycle of movies with the common link of the painting, “Pollock”, “Frida” and “Girl with a Pearl Earring” for its biographical character and “Far from heaven” for the relation of his stills with Hopper’s aesthetics.
The approach was to relate the cinema to his origins, with the first inventions that were using the persistence of the vision to create the illusion of the movement. The Praxinoscope for the movie “Frida”, the Thaumatrope invented by Jhon Ayton Paris for Hopper’s movie and the drawn animation frame to frame in case of “Pollock”.
